Our brokenness is also the source of our common humanity, the basis for our shared search for comfort, meaning, and healing. Our shared vulnerability and imperfection nurtures and sustains our capacity for compassion.

Life invites us into a holy intimacy with both joy and sorrow. A rabbi teaches that we must bless the good and the bad, and in that blessing we step into a larger way of seeing. Buddhism whispers of two dimensions: the historical, where everything comes and goes, and the ultimate, where nothing is ever born or ever dies. In the first, we grieve and we celebrate; in the second, we rest in what is eternal, beyond measure. There’s a certain amount of pain that we’re all going to have in our lives; that’s unavoidable. But whether or not we suffer on top of that pain is up to us. To dwell in the present moment is to surrender our resistance and receive life as it is, fragile and luminous.

May your heart stay tender in the only moment you are given.
